Avatar 2 & 3 Shoot Back-to-Back

With the upcoming re-release of James Cameron’s Avatar only a few weeks away, there’s been renewed interest in every last morsel of information regarding Avatar 2. Cameron has previously indicated that the sequel will delve into regions of Pandora unexplored in the first film (specifically the planet’s oceans) and that he has no intentions of rushing into it.

Despite the fact that Avatar 2 is still several years away, it turns out it might not be too soon to start speculating over Avatar 3 as well.

In an interview with MTV, Cameron reveals that he’s talked to the studio about shooting back-to-back sequels – so that they can capture the performances for both films all at once.

So…

Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine Join Bernie

August 7th, 2010 by lawwebbhh651109j87hN5gxp2l | Comments Off | Filed in Movie

Jack Black will again act for his School of Rock director in Richard Linklater’s upcoming Bernie , says The Hollywood Reporter .

The film, based on the true story of Berhardt “Bernie” Tiede, features Black as a mortician who becomes companion to an 81 year old widow, Marjorie Nugent (to be played by Shirley MacLaine). Tiede was convicted of shooting Nugent in 1996 and hiding her body in a freezer for nine months, pretending as though she was still alive (ironically, the similarly-titled Weekend at Bernie’s used a similar plot to comedic effect just a few years before the crime occurred).

Bernie begins production this October in Carthage, Texas, the same location as the original murder.

Cheadle & Pinto Joining ‘Rise of the Apes?’

June 18th, 2010 by lawwebbhh651109j87hN5gxp2l | Comments Off | Filed in Movie

Planet of the Apes prequel casting cheadle pinto

Just a few weeks ago, 20th Century Fox cast James Franco as the lead in their upcoming prequel Rise of the Apes and the studio is now looking to bring two other significant names onboard – namely acclaimed performers Don Cheadle and Freida Pinto.

A prequel to the original 1968 Planet of the Apes film, Rise of the Apes revolves around a modern-day scientist (Franco) who conducts genetic experiments on a chimp he dubs Caesar, in the hopes of developing a cure for Alzheimers.  Caesar begins to develop human-like intelligence and leads a rebellion against his captors (which happened before in the 1972 sequel Conquest of the Planet of the Apes) that eventually results in a world dominated by apes.

Brit Rupert Wyatt was officially confirmed as the film’s director last month and will work from a screenplay that was restructured by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver following the fallout between original Rise of the Apes director Scott Frank and Fox Studio officials.

Shooting is scheduled to begin in Vancouver this July, with Peter Jackson’s Weta Digital (King Kong) set to bring the apes to life via CGI and motion-caputure animation, instead of makeup and prosthetics (which were used in all the previous Apes films).

Planet of the Apes prequel

Cheadle is an Oscar-nominated talent who is currently making waves in theaters as Lt. Col. James “Rhodey” Rhodes/War Machine in Iron Man 2.  He’s always a welcome presence in my book – even when he’s doing his horrible Cockney accent from the Ocean’s 11 trilogy – so I’m all for Cheadle joining the new Apes film.

Pinto left a good impression on most moviegoers with her performance as Latika in Slumdog Millionaire and will hopefully continue her winning steak in this year’s Woody Allen flick You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger.  Presumedly, she and Cheadle will play human characters in the Apes prequel, since it sounds as though the apes will be primarily GGI creatures that are more realistic in design than those of the original Planet of the Apes (or even Tim Burton’s “re-imagining”).

So what do you think?  Do you like the idea of Cheadle and Pinto joining Rise of the Apes?  Let us know in the comments section below.

Rise of the Apes is scheduled to arrive in theaters in the U.S. on June 24th, 2011.

‘MacGruber’ Team Talks ’80s Action Flicks & Celery Abuse

May 21st, 2010 by lawwebbhh651109j87hN5gxp2l | Comments Off | Filed in Movie

MacGruber cast interviews

This week I attended the press junket for Universal’s movie adaptation of the SNL sketch MacGruber and had a chance to talk with stars Will Forte, Kristen Wiig and Ryan Phillippe, along with SNL writers Jorma Taccone and John Solomon who directed and co-wrote the film, respectively.

The conversation was fast and funny, with topics ranging from the unlikely journey of MacGruber from sketch to feature film, the late 80s/early 90s action flicks which inspired the movie, and the soon-to-be-infamous “celery scene.”

To be specific, I had a chance to speak with stars Will Forte (who also co-wrote the film), Kristen Wiig and Ryan Phillippe, and director Jorma Taccone; somehow we made it through the entire set of interviews without co-writer John Solomon saying a word. Maybe he said half a word, but if so, it was too soft for the voice recorder to register.

Although, looking over the conversation it’s understandable why someone would remain speechless. Here are the highlights:

Will Forte on his mom’s set visit on the day they shot that infamous “celery scene.”

WF: Yes she was there for the scene…involving celery – and she was not alone. She was with two friends…We were shooting in Albuquerque and they very quickly decided to go to Santa Fe for the afternoon…I forgot that I should probably warn her about what was going on. She was actually ok with it – it’s really more her friends. She couldn’t seem like she was ok with it in front of her friends, but I knew she was ok with it…She’s seen me in compromising positions before.

RP: I had to go to a really dark place for that…no body double…When I first read the script, I’m like, “I wonder how tied they are to this moment? Wonder if I can get them to do it a different way…” And then after spending a couple of weeks on the set and seeing Will constantly naked doing anything it took to make the scene work and be funny, there was no way I could back down.

KW: And they made him do it.

RP: Yeah, I just went for it…and it will follow me forever.

Has MacGyver (Richard Dean Anderson) seen MacGruber?

JT: I don’t know if he’s seen it…

WF: I don’t think he’s seen it…he just sent me an email last night just saying “Good Luck” and we love that guy – he is such a tremendous guy. We got to make a couple of MacGrubers [with him] for SNL and for the Super Bowl Commercial we did last year and just fell in love with the guy.

Which 80s/90s action flicks influenced and inspired MacGruber?

JT: We all sort of grew up in that era…All of us are HUGE fans of the original MacGyver series, and obviously we found that inspirational for the initial pitch for [the MacGruber sketch] – we basically took his name and made it stupid…In terms of inspiration for  the movie, that really  came from our love of late 80s/early 90s action movies. So like the whole Lethal Weapon series, and Rambo, and Die Hard and every single Schwarzenegger and Stallone movie…

WF: Uncommon Valor, Tango and Cash

JT:  Road House gets a little nod with the throat rips…there’s a lot of different stuff in the movie. It’s detailed…like when you first see MacGruber working on the bomb in the opening credits – that bomb is a replica of the Die Hard bomb…When Piper, Ryan’s character, is looking at POV through binoculars, I went and found binocular [POV] from Commando and freeze-framed it. There’s a lot of stuff like that. The love runs deep.

RP: I think we were all conscious of paying homage to Die Hard, and Lethal Weapon and Rambo…but in terms of actually portraying the character, for me it was just about trying to play a legit soldier and trying to deal with this complete moron…but I didn’t base the character on anyone in particular…we played it like we were in a real 80s action movie and it works that way.

KW: I don’t think there’s a character that’s like Vicki in those ’80s movies…so I kind of made it up as I went along…I think that heightens the comedy, when you have people really playing it serious.

macgruber cast writer interviews press junket

How does MacGruber compare to Naked Gun?

JT: We were in a lot of ways trying not to be spoofy…this is our attempt at sort of making our own ode to late 80s/early 90s action movies. A lot of the acting in it we were sort of trying to have be as deadpan and serious as possible. All the characters that are surrounding MacGruber, it was our intention to make them a little less goofy than you’d maybe expect from an SNL movie.

WF: Make no mistake though, we are huge, fans of those [Naked Gun] movies.

JT: Powers Boothe, when he first found out we were interested in hiring him, he was like “What is it – am I Leslie Neelson?” And we’re like “No, no, pretend you’re in a real action movie…” It was always our intention to surround this character with a cast of dramatic actors.

WF: It’s a lot different than the sketch. I think people are thinking that it’s just going to be the sketch over and over again for 90 minutes and I think they’ll be pleasantly surprised by how different it is.

JT: …It’s hard because I think when people hear “SNL comedy” I think that rightfully so you expect it to be a certain type of goofiness…so we would constantly have to fight against that and try to go for the more real 80s action movie kind of choices.

Continue to writing, pitching and shooting a MacGruber movie…

Will Star Sapphire Appear in Green Lantern?

May 20th, 2010 by lawwebbhh651109j87hN5gxp2l | Comments Off | Filed in Movie

green lantern movie blake lively carol ferris star sapphire

Superhero Hype was looking at a Vogue article in which actress Blake Lively (Gossip Girl) talked about her career as a young starlet and Hollywood hot-girl – including her current role playing Carol Ferris, the love interest of hero Hal Jordan in DCE/WB’s upcoming adaptation of Green Lantern.

Amidst the usual chatter, there was one interesting quote that Superhero Hype zeroed in on: Some of what Lively had to say has fanboys wondering if we won’t see the actress appearing as the super powered Star Sapphire in the Green Lantern movie.

If you don’t know your comic book lore, in the Green Lantern books Lively’s character, Carol Ferris, is the spunky (and attractive) head of Ferris Air, the aviation company her father owns and where Hal Jordan (a.k.a. Green Lantern) works as a test pilot. At first Hal and Carol have the usual hero/damsel love thang going – but soon after Hal dons his emerald ring and becomes a hero, Carol is bonded with an alien stone from outer space, which empowers her with the violet light of love. Reborn as Star Sapphire, needless to say Hal and Carol’s romance gets a little bit more complicated.

I wrote about the possibility of Star Sapphire appearing in the Green Lantern movie awhile back, but I don’t think any of ever really considered it a possibility that Sapphire would appear in this first film, which is ostensibly an origin story about Hal Jordan becomes Green Lantern.

green lantern movie blake lively carol ferris star sapphire

However, here’s what Lively had to say during her Vogue interview:

Our director likes it real—the fights close and dirty…I’m 40 feet in the air, spiraling around. That’s the best workout you can ever do because it’s all core…You do that for ten minutes and you should see your body the next day! It’s so exhilarating, so thrilling—and nauseating,”

The interviewer (Hamish Bowles) also notes that Lively is describing stunts being performed in the same aerial rig used for the Matrix movies (remember that final Superman-inspired battle between Neo and Agent Smith?).

There’s only two real ways to read into a quote like that, when you think about it: either Lively’s character, Carol Ferris, is involved in some free-falling damsel in distress sequence, or the girl is up there flying around, trading light beams with the big boys.

The question is: which scenario is more likely?

green lantern movie blake lively carol ferris star sapphire

For this first film? I’m going to have to go with the damsel in distress angle. We already know that [Spoiler Alert!!!] actor Mark Strong’s (Kick-Ass) character, Sinestro, won’t be revealed as a fascist Machiavellian villain until either the end of Green Lantern or the start of Green Lantern 2, so it’s hard to imagine that the Carol Ferris-turning-Star-Sapphire story would be introduced so early.

Also if you remember the casting call sheet for Green Lantern, the description of Carol Ferris doesn’t really suggest a Star Sapphire appearance:

[CAROL FERRIS]
26-32, a smart and attractive woman with an MBA. She started as a pilot and now runs Ferris Aircraft. She is a work-a-holic…FEMALE LEAD

On the other hand, there are some valid reasons why the Star Sapphire transformation would take place in the first Green Lantern film. We know that the movie’s villain, Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard), will likely get his psychic powers from an alien rock (as per his comic book “secret” origin), so it’s not far-fetched that Carol Ferris could be affected in the same way. We also  know that Green Lantern is already being conceived as a cinematic trilogy (at the very least), so it all depends where that trilogy hopes to venture in terms of story.

If we’re talking sequels dealing with the “Sinestro Corps War” or “War of Light” storylines seen in recent years of the Green Lantern comics, then Star Sapphire would certainly need to be introduced into the movie continuity sooner before later.

green lantern movie war of the light

Will the Green Lantern movies cover “War of Light”?

As they say in court: “There is both motive and opportunity here…

What do you guys think: will Star Sapphire appear in Green Lantern? Or does the sort of scene Lively is describing sound more like some damsel in distress aerial stunt work?

Green Lantern will be in theaters on June 17, 2011.

SR Pick [Video]: Lost Finale Fan-Made Trailer

May 17th, 2010 by lawwebbhh651109j87hN5gxp2l | Comments Off | Filed in Movie

Lost Finale Fan Trailer

A fan-made trailer for the Lost finale has already caught the attention of showrunner Damon Lindelof. The co-creator of Lost tweeted about the brilliantly cut trailer only one day after it showed up on YouTube. I have to admit, I got chills more than once during the two-minute video.

Now, I’m not saying it is perfect. In fact, it lacks some essential characters and iconic moments. But that’s not the point. In only two minutes, the trailer could get any naysayer to watch the show and it is almost entirely thanks to the music. The track in question is “Shooting Star” from the Stardust score. The music captures the epic nature of a finale six years in the making.

Lost has completely captivated audiences since its inception, and continues to mystify. The show does not merit a kind of insane trailer like the one we made for this summer’s slate of movies. Instead, it should be presented with the same emotion and fascination the show explores.

The trailer does a wonderful job of mixing natural sound and music. The creator added an echo to much of John Locke’s dialogue, giving him a celestial narration. Instead of relying on action and explosions, the trailer focuses on the mystery of the island. After all, that is what the show is about, right?

While this may not be the trailer you see on television, it is undoubtedly one of the best you’ll see for Lost.  It makes you realize just how wonderful the look and spirit of the show truly was.

The 2 1/2 hour Lost finale airs on ABC on Sunday, May 23rd, 2010. What did you think of the trailer?

Pierce Brosnan Joins ‘St. Vincent’

May 17th, 2010 by lawwebbhh651109j87hN5gxp2l | Comments Off | Filed in Movie

Pierce Brosnan St Vincent

It looked like Walter Hill’s crime thriller St. Vincent had fallen by the wayside when original star Mickey Rourke dropped out of the project – following his Oscar nominated performance in The Wrestler.

Well that’s far from the case, as former James Bond star, Pierce Brosnan, has slipped into the vacated role. St. Vincent is up for grabs at the Cannes Film Festival with shooting starting on July 12th in Detroit.

Billy Bob Thornton, Maria Bello, who starred with Brosnan in Butterfly on A Wheel (or Shattered depending on where you caught it), as well as Giovanni Ribisi have also joined the St. Vincent cast.

According to Variety:

“St. Vincent follows a hitman (Brosnan) who goes undercover as a priest to get close to his target, a gangland traitor (Thornton). The hitman soon discovers that playing the good guy is more dangerous than being a mob killer.”

It’s good to see Hill back in the saddle directing again, as his last big screen effort was Undisputed in 2002. He knows how to assemble a tense action-thriller with strong (and at times blatant) western undertones which can be seen in films like 48 Hours, Last Man Standing and The Long Riders.

walter hill directs St Vincent

Walter Hill

As for Brosnan, the actor is developing an interesting and varied post-Bond career. His recent role in Roman Polanski’s superb thriller The Ghost showed the actor tinkering with his image – stepping into the shoes of an embattled British Prime Minister. The new St. Vincent role is kindred in spirit to his hit-man performance in the under-rated The Matador.

Brosnan’s business partner Beau St. Clair will produce St. Vincent through their Irish Dreamtime branch alongside Claudio Castravelli and Jon Turtle.

What do you think of Brosnan stepping in for Rourke? Think you’ll check out St. Vincent?

No official release date has been set for St Vincent but we’ll keep you posted as we hear more.

‘Rockford Files’ Remake Canceled

May 16th, 2010 by lawwebbhh651109j87hN5gxp2l | Comments Off | Filed in Movie

rockford files remake dermot mulroney

The Rockford Files remake has been canceled.

The pilot for the rebooted detective series was considered a disaster – and the show will not be picked up by NBC. The 21st Century version of the 1970s series was set to star Dermot Mulroney as the laconic detective Jim Rockford.

Vulture delved deep into this particular set of Rockford files, and discovered the pilot for the potential series didn’t work – and that it was “more rehash than reinvention”.  A lot of the blame appears to be getting placed on director Michael Watkins – a TV veteran who has helmed everything from Quantum Leap to Justified.

According to one of Vulture’s sources at NBC:

“The pilot looked like it was shot in the seventies. You didn’t even know it was the current day until Jim pulled out his cell phone. It looked like Stephen J. Cannell directed it himself.”

Apparently, everything from the overarching pacing down to technical details, such as the lighting, made the show appear too retro – but not in a good way!

Some complaints have also focused on Mulroney’s interpretation of Jim Rockford. Audience members had mixed opinions, some saying he “didn’t pop” with others calling him “adorable” in the role originally played by the great James Garner.

Rockford Files Dermot Mulroney

‘Adorable’ or ‘Didn’t Pop’?

Prison Break producer Dawn Parouse was called in to rework the pilot only days before shooting began. Then, once the show was in the can, she spent a week attempting to fix it in editing. While Parouse was able to turn things around (in a minimal way) it would appear that NBC decided it wasn’t enough to convince them to pick up the series.

The show was even given a second look, as NBC’s Entertainment President, Angela Bromstad, saw it as a way to keep Steve Carell (who was co-producing the Rockford remake with David Shore) in The Office beyond a seventh season – since Carell wants to leave and focus on his movie career. Bromstad is also close with Shore, who found previous success when he created House.

The Rockford Files has built-in brand recognition and, perhaps, older viewers would have tuned-in out of curiosity alone.

But for how long? Apparently, NBC didn’t think the end-product would have kept nostalgic viewers interested very long – even though, originally, The Rockford Files remake was thought to be a sure thing!

Are you surprised to hear the fate of The Rockford Files remake? What do you think of NBC’s choice not to go forward with the series?

Chris Hemsworth Talks Thor, His Hammer & The Avengers

May 16th, 2010 by lawwebbhh651109j87hN5gxp2l | Comments Off | Filed in Movie

Chris Hemsworth talks Thor, his hammer Mjolnir and The Avengers

Chris Hemsworth finished shooting his scenes as the title character in Thor last week and has since been interviewed about the Marvel Studios production on several occasions. While he does give the usual media-trained response and avoidance of any major revelations about the Thor movie, he does talk about his costume, shooting such an epic movie and The Avengers.

Hemsworth was recently in attendance at the Australians In Film Breakthrough Awards ceremony in Hollywood where SuperHeroHype and About.com caught up to the soon-to-be-superstar actor to talk Thor.

When Chris Hemsworth was officially cast as Thor there was a generally positive reaction from fans and rightfully so. Not only was he a fresh face in the industry who looked the part, but he’s very enthusiastic about the role and what Marvel Studios has planned for him going forward. [Warning: Minor Spoiler regarding Iron Man 2 Easter Egg]

But is he really excited?

“Absolutely! I just finished shooting last Thursday, and saw Iron Man 2 the other day–which I loved–and saw the tag at the end. I was with a bunch of mates and we all got kind of giddy watching it. I can’t wait! It was such an incredible four months shooting that film, and I think the film’s going to be fantastic.”

What did Hemsworth want to do with the character in bringing him to life?

“We just kept trying to humanize it all, and keep it very real. Look into all the research about the comic books that we could, but also bring it back to ‘Who is this guy as a person, and what’s his relationship with people in the individual scenes?’ And working with someone like Kenneth Branagh, who has all those bases covered and has so many ideas, it was a hell of a time!”

About.com also had the chance to speak with Chris at a Hollywood ceremony and chatted about Thor.

What did he think about the Thor costume?

“Oh, it was crazy. I remember the first camera test and putting it on and going, ‘Oh my god,’ and then everyone who came and looked at it was like, ‘Wow, this is a monumental sort of moment.’ And standing in it was a very odd experience, you know? But it was beautiful. I mean, Alex Byrne designed the costume and they spent I think almost two years kind of leading up and building that thing and setting it up. It really paid off. The thing is incredible. It’s not very comfortable, but…”

Are there any specific action moments or scenes that fans should look forward to?

“Oh god, I mean the whole thing. The action sequences in this, Andy Armstrong and Vic Armstrong – the geniuses who have been doing stunts in this business for 20 or 30 years – did the stunts on this, and I’ve never seen anything like what they set up and all the stunt guys what they put together, wire gags but then also real hand-to-hand sort of combat. I mean incredible sets. Bo Welch built these sets and we hardly used any green screen. There were these big recreations of Asgard, this sort of sci-fi, Viking mixture.”

How about the mystical hammer Mjolnir, the same weapon we saw buried in a crater out in New Mexico at the end of Iron Man 2?

“It’s incredible. I tried to steal it but they wouldn’t let me. It’s a beautiful piece of design, equipment, whatever… What would you call it? Weapon. No, it’s incredible. It looks just like what they have in the comics with the engravings from Asgard.”

After Thor and The First Avenger: Captain America, the next movie confirmed to come out of Marvel Studios is The Avengers. How is Chris Hemsworth prepping for it?

“Look, I just sat down with the Marvel guys and Joss Whedon recently and talked about it. It starts next January, I think, or February, around that time we start shooting. And I think it’s going to be a hell of a ride. When you bring in Iron Man and Captain America and whoever else they wrangle from the Marvel universe, it’s going to be a hell of a film.”

After news surfaced that Joss Whedon would be helming The Avengers, it was reported as unconfirmed but this is just more evidence to the contrary.

It sounds like principal photography on Kenneth Branagh’s Thor is near done and we’re set for the big trailer reveal at International Comic-Con. It also appears that they’re already running with The Avengers with a start date at the beginning of 2011, as we’ve also heard from Samuel L. Jackson previously.

I don’t need to say it again, but I will anyway; Thor is my most anticipated Marvel character movie and has been for years. All signs point to this being something very special and we’ll let you know if it delivers live from Comic-Con this July.

Follow me on Twitter @rob_keyes.

Iron Man 2 is currently in theaters everywhere, Thor opens May 5, 2011, The First Avenger: Captain America hits July 22, 2011 and The Avengers is scheduled to debut May 4, 2012.
