DiCaprio To Play Hoover In Eastwood’s Biopic

June 18th, 2010 by lawwebbhh651109j87hN5gxp2l | Comments Off | Filed in Movie

DiCaprio to star in Clint Eastwood's Hoover biopic

Following his stint this summer as a morally-questionable professional in Christopher Nolan’s new film Inception, Leonardo DiCaprio will take on the role of another (albeit real-life) controversial workaholic – namely, J. Edgar Hoover in director Clint Eastwood’s biopic, which is tentatively titled Hoover.

Eastwood will reteam with his Changeling producer Brian Grazer for Hoover, which will be based on a script written by Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (Milk).

Warner Bros. will distribute the film, which Eastwood is set to begin working on following the completion of his supernatural drama Hereafter with his Invictus star Matt Damon.

Hoover’s reign as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (F.B.I.) lasted for over 37 years and began in the mid-1930s, as seen last year in Michael Mann’s period crime caper, Public Enemies.  There’s no word at this point as to how much of Hoover’s life will be chronicled in Eastwood’s film, but I would expect it to focus on Hoover’s public behavior and how it differed significantly from his private life (where he was known for being a cross-dresser amongst other things…).

This will be DiCaprio’s third leading performance in a biographical pic with an Oscar-winning director at the helm. His first two biopic outings were playing the young con man Frank Abagnale in Steven Spielberg’s film Catch Me If You Can back in 2002, and the troubled but brilliant Howard Hughes in Martin Scorsese’s 2004 flick, The Aviator.

Leonardo DiCaprio has previously starred in biopics

Two of DiCaprio’s previous forays into the biopic genre

If the acclaimed actor does is indeed “going to spread his wings” in the role of Hoover (as an insider told Deadline) then he may be up for his fourth Oscar-nomination as well – assuming that he isn’t nominated for his Inception role, that is.

One of complaints I still hear about DiCaprio’s performance in The Aviator was that he simply looked too young to play the aging Hughes – or any other “mature” character – despite his being 30 at the time.  Six years later and DiCaprio’s appearances in two other Scorsese films – The Departed and Shutter Island – have proven him to be a rather intense actor, capable of holding the audience’s attention despite his (admittedly) youthful disposition.

What do you think?  Do you like the idea of DiCaprio and Eastwood working together?  Let us know in the comments section below.

Hoover is tentatively set to arrive in theaters sometime in 2012, though that could change in the future, given Eastwood’s tendency to work fast as a director.

The Avengers Movie Villains Are The Skrulls?

May 21st, 2010 by lawwebbhh651109j87hN5gxp2l | Comments Off | Filed in Movie

The Avengers Movie Villains are the Skrulls

Who on Earth is mighty enough to stand up to The Avengers? A big question for fans of the Marvel comics and movies is what villain(s) will be featured in The Avengers movie who can act as worthy opponents to Thor, Captain America, Iron Man and the Hulk. What if I were to say the answer to that question were “no one,” because no one from Earth will be fighting our favorite superheroes?

Instead, we just might be seeing The Avengers battling it out against aliens! If you’re a comic reader, you’re likely very well aware of the Skrulls, the green long-eared shapeshifters who were the focus of the recent Invasion crossover event in the Marvel universe. According to an “insider” of Comic Book Movie, The Skrulls will be the primary villains of Joss Whedon’s team-up epic.

Joining the Skrulls in this rumored plot information would be the Kree, another alien species who ally with the good guys (us measily humans and our super-heroic friends) against the Skrulls. Tying that rumor into the news of Kevin Pennington signing a 3-picture deal with Marvel Studios, one of the characters he is rumored to play is a Kree.

Comparing this idea to what we know from the comics, the Skrulls have been a major player in recent years. And in the Ultimates series, where Marvel has been grabbing a lot of its ideas from for their films, the Skrulls were also the key villains, except presented in a more believable way and I can see them adapting that into The Avengers franchise.

Joss Whedon struck a chord with Marvel fans with his successful and critically acclaimed 25-issue run on Astonishing X-Men, where he told a story involving aliens who wanted to destroy our planet. This is not new to him and if this rumor has any truth to it, then Whedon’s work no doubt secured him the job of handing The Avengers for Marvel.

With Whedon’s history and the Skrulls playing a major role in the books, this might not be too off the mark. Again, this is a completely unverified rumor and the script is currently being re-worked with Whedon coming on board. He’s also reportedly re-working the script for The First Avenger: Captain America to ensure the interconnected share movie universe correctly flows into The Avengers and Marvel’s plans going forward.

As with most recent Marvel Studios rumors, we can expect some official details and major updates come San Diego International Comic-Con in July where we’ll be reporting every detail live as it breaks.

Upcoming Movie Release Dates Announced

May 20th, 2010 by lawwebbhh651109j87hN5gxp2l | Comments Off | Filed in Movie

Coming Soon Movie Release Dates

Several studios have announced a number of official release dates for in-development films set to debut over the next couple years. Surprisingly, only four of the 16  are sequels. In a time when it seems every other “new” movie is a sequel or reboot, that number is quite pleasing.

There are a few comedies, a honey-loving bear, a deadly virus, and plenty more hitting theaters between now and 2013. The next three years are full of some epic comic book adaptations and summer blockbusters. But not every film is geared for the geeks and fanboys.

For a quick rundown of the new release dates, here they are in list form. Below that, you’ll find more descriptive breakdowns of each.

Upcoming Movie Release Dates

The first weekend of 2011 presents quite the thriller. Unknown White Male stars Liam Neeson as a man who awakens from a coma and quickly discovers his identity has been stolen. But this is not just any case of identity theft. Nobody, not even his wife, believes him until a young woman helps his search. The film co-stars Diane Kruger and January Jones, along with Frank Langella. Unknown White Male releases January 7, 2011.

Anthony Hopkins will close out the first month of 2011 by teaching an up-and-coming priest a thing or two about exorcisms. The Rite, which releases January 28th, 2011, adapts the Matt Baglio novel of the same title. Apparently, the story is the true tale of a “disillusioned American seminary student who attends exorcism school at the Vatican and ultimately finds his faith through encounters with demonic forces.” Sounds interesting enough, but a late January release date casts a shadow on its potential.

Anthony Hopkins Exorcist The Rite

The Farrelly Brothers are still looking for their next comedy hit. It’s been a long three years since The Heartbreak Kid, but the directors will hop back on the saddle with Hall Pass on February 25, 2011. The film has some mid-level star power in Owen Wilson, Jenna Fischer, Alyssa Milano, Christina Applegate, Jason Sudeikis and Richard Jenkins. The story follows a married man given an open invitation by his own wife to have an affair.

In March of 2010, Diary of a Wimpy Kid came out of nowhere with the intention of kick-starting a new film series based on a novel. While it quadrupled its $15 million production budget, the buzz was not as widespread as 20th Century Fox hoped. Regardless, the studio has given Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules a March 25, 2011 release date. The fifth novel by Jeff Kinney will be released this year, but the studio may catch up quickly if they continue to release one each year.

The Girl with the Red Riding Hood has been handed an April 22, 2011 release date. Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke will guide Amanda Seyfried through the woods in this adaptation of the classic tale. If the director’s history doesn’t worry you, the premise sure might. Orphan screenwriter David Johnson has written a script where the wandering girl gets caught in a love triangle amidst her other infamous problems.

Catherine Hardwicke - Red Riding Hood

If you’ve been desperately awaiting a Winnie the Pooh adaptation, Disney has given you a date to save. A mid-summer release on July 15th, 2011 will give the animated bear and his friends to a theatrical makeover. Renowned voice actor Jim Cummings (330 titles in 25 years) will voice both Pooh and Tigger, Peter Cullen (the voice of Optimus Prime in Transformers) will perform Eeyore and Craig Ferguson will voice the Owl.

Also releasing July 15th, 2011, The Sitter will put Jonah Hill in the middle of a babysitting adventure he’ll never forget. In an argument for typecasting, Hill has been cast as a suspended college student. The film is rumored as a mix between Adventures in Babysitting and Superbad.

Four Christmases director Seth Gordon will lead an A-list cast in the July 25th, 2011 comedy Horrible Bosses. Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, Jason Bateman, Jamie Foxx and Charlie Day make up the cast of New Line’s hopeful summer hit. The plot reads, “Three friends conspire to murder their awful bosses when they realize they are standing in the way of their happiness. If anything makes the film a worthy watch it is the presence of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Charlie Day.

Horrible Bosses cast

Although still in the script phase, Late Bloomer now has an August 12, 2011 release date. The film adapts Ken Baker’s novel Made: A Memoir and tells “the story of an adult male who, after the successful removal of a benign tumor resting his pituitary gland, experiences all the changes and effects of puberty over a three-week period.”

In mid-March, Warner Bros. announced the intent to make Final Destination 5, much to the dismay of movie fans. A once great concept has been dragged along the road far too long and the studio is hoping a 3D sequel will change that. The fifth installment continues to make progress with an announced release date of August 26th, 2011.

Dark Castle Entertainment has given The Apparition a September 9th, 2011 release date. It sounds a bit like a combination of the studio’s own upcoming film Splice and the indie hit Paranormal Activity. The synopsis says The Apparition is about “a couple haunted by a supernatural presence that is unleashed during a college experiment.”

Say what you will about Brendan Fraser’s acting career, but he’s still got a franchise or two up his sleeve. The actor returns in 3D on September 23rd, 2011 with Journey to the Center of the Earth 2. The world has only itself to blame after a nearly $250 million box office for Journey to the Center of the Earth.

One of my most anticipated films of next year is Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion. Now, with an official release date of October 21st, 2001, it sits in prime position for Oscar buzz. Talented writer Scott Z. Burns penned the script that will star Marion Cotillard, Matt Damon, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne and Gwenyth Paltrow. The story explores the results of an international viral outbreak and the hysteria caused by mass media.

Contagion cast with Soderbergh

Valentine’s Day made half of its domestic box office on opening weekend, proving its gimmicky Valentine’s Day weekend release date to be a decent idea. The studio is attempting to recreate the relative success of the holiday ensemble piece with New Year’s Eve. The only difference is this “sequel” will release December 9th, 2011. The story structure remains the same, but the cast is still in the assembly phase.

20th Century Fox will release Cameron Crowe’s next project, We Bought A Zoo, on December 23rd, 2011. Production should begin this fall. 27 Dresses and The Devils Wears Prada writer Aline Brosh McKenna is penning the script. I’m not sure the connection between Crowe and McKenna, but it is safe to trust a filmmaker like Crowe.

Further down the road, Disney has announced Reboot Ralph will hit theaters March 22, 2013.  The film is apparently an animated adventure through the world of a video game. It was previously known as Joe Jump.

A scene from Journey to Center of the Earth 3D

Is that enough release dates for you? There’s plenty to add to your movie schedule, but not quite as entertaining a list as the next two summers. Still, movies are what we here at Screen Rant live for, so no complaints.

As usual, stay tuned for the latest movie news and release date updates. We’ll keep your movie ears burning.

Spider-Man Reboot Snags Spider-Man Trilogy Writer

May 18th, 2010 by lawwebbhh651109j87hN5gxp2l | Comments Off | Filed in Movie

amazing spider-man reboot writer alvin sargent

Heat Vision Blog nabbed the exclusive news that Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man reboot will be having its script polished by Alvin Sargent, the 83 year-old writer of both Spider-Man 2 and (unfortunately) Spider-Man 3. Sargent also did uncredited work on the first Spider-Man film and was also onboard to help with the script for the canceled Spider-Man 4, basically making him the guru of Spider-Man movies.

If you can’t tell by the title of this post, I’m looking at this news from the “Glass half full” perspective…for now.

Sargent is being brought in by Sony/Columbia Pictures to polish James Vanderbilt’s Spider-Man reboot script. Vanderbilt (Zodiac) was originally brought in by Sony to write a draft of the Spider-Man 4 script along with Sargent, before that project ultimately fell apart. This latest news yet again implies that themes and ideas for Spider-Man 4 will carry over to this reboot.

With screen credits like Ordinary People, Paper Moon and Unfaithful, it’s safe to say that Alvin Sargent knows how to bring human drama to the big screen. The goal of this Spidey reboot is delve deep into the struggles of Peter Parker, a seventeen-year-old geek outcast burdened with super powers and a guilt-inspired obligation to do right, following the tragic murder of his uncle.

For those worried that this is all sounding too “dark” or “serious” or “Dark Knight” – especially with guys like Vanderbilt and Sargent penning it – may I remind you that Sargent is just as versed in comedy as he is in drama: the guy wrote the story for What About Bob? for Pete’s sake.

spider man 3 sandman story alvin sargent

It does raise a half-mast red flag that Sargent was a contributor to that horrible over-stuffed story for Spider-Man 3. But then again, let’s be honest: it was the studio that crammed too many villains and storylines down our throat – the screenwriters were tasked with making it all make sense onscreen. And though I HATED the “dramatic” subplot involving The Sandman killing Uncle Ben, it at least gave Spider-Man 3 a little bit of logical and dramatic grounding amidst all the action sequence and f/x madness.

As I said, for now I’m looking at Sargent’s involvement with this Spider-Man reboot as a “Glass half full” situation, and hope that he can bring things back to the dramatically moving (but still fun) heights of Spider-Man 2.

Although, having an 83 year-old man writing a young teen character in a movie aimed at a young crowd is a situation that does come with potential problems. Here’s hoping Peter Parker doesn’t end up trying to change his costume in, say, a phone booth – they don’t exist anymore!

The Spider-Man reboot is being directed by Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer). It is slated to hit theaters on July 3, 2012.

Chris Hemsworth Talks Thor, His Hammer & The Avengers

May 16th, 2010 by lawwebbhh651109j87hN5gxp2l | Comments Off | Filed in Movie

Chris Hemsworth talks Thor, his hammer Mjolnir and The Avengers

Chris Hemsworth finished shooting his scenes as the title character in Thor last week and has since been interviewed about the Marvel Studios production on several occasions. While he does give the usual media-trained response and avoidance of any major revelations about the Thor movie, he does talk about his costume, shooting such an epic movie and The Avengers.

Hemsworth was recently in attendance at the Australians In Film Breakthrough Awards ceremony in Hollywood where SuperHeroHype and About.com caught up to the soon-to-be-superstar actor to talk Thor.

When Chris Hemsworth was officially cast as Thor there was a generally positive reaction from fans and rightfully so. Not only was he a fresh face in the industry who looked the part, but he’s very enthusiastic about the role and what Marvel Studios has planned for him going forward. [Warning: Minor Spoiler regarding Iron Man 2 Easter Egg]

But is he really excited?

“Absolutely! I just finished shooting last Thursday, and saw Iron Man 2 the other day–which I loved–and saw the tag at the end. I was with a bunch of mates and we all got kind of giddy watching it. I can’t wait! It was such an incredible four months shooting that film, and I think the film’s going to be fantastic.”

What did Hemsworth want to do with the character in bringing him to life?

“We just kept trying to humanize it all, and keep it very real. Look into all the research about the comic books that we could, but also bring it back to ‘Who is this guy as a person, and what’s his relationship with people in the individual scenes?’ And working with someone like Kenneth Branagh, who has all those bases covered and has so many ideas, it was a hell of a time!”

About.com also had the chance to speak with Chris at a Hollywood ceremony and chatted about Thor.

What did he think about the Thor costume?

“Oh, it was crazy. I remember the first camera test and putting it on and going, ‘Oh my god,’ and then everyone who came and looked at it was like, ‘Wow, this is a monumental sort of moment.’ And standing in it was a very odd experience, you know? But it was beautiful. I mean, Alex Byrne designed the costume and they spent I think almost two years kind of leading up and building that thing and setting it up. It really paid off. The thing is incredible. It’s not very comfortable, but…”

Are there any specific action moments or scenes that fans should look forward to?

“Oh god, I mean the whole thing. The action sequences in this, Andy Armstrong and Vic Armstrong – the geniuses who have been doing stunts in this business for 20 or 30 years – did the stunts on this, and I’ve never seen anything like what they set up and all the stunt guys what they put together, wire gags but then also real hand-to-hand sort of combat. I mean incredible sets. Bo Welch built these sets and we hardly used any green screen. There were these big recreations of Asgard, this sort of sci-fi, Viking mixture.”

How about the mystical hammer Mjolnir, the same weapon we saw buried in a crater out in New Mexico at the end of Iron Man 2?

“It’s incredible. I tried to steal it but they wouldn’t let me. It’s a beautiful piece of design, equipment, whatever… What would you call it? Weapon. No, it’s incredible. It looks just like what they have in the comics with the engravings from Asgard.”

After Thor and The First Avenger: Captain America, the next movie confirmed to come out of Marvel Studios is The Avengers. How is Chris Hemsworth prepping for it?

“Look, I just sat down with the Marvel guys and Joss Whedon recently and talked about it. It starts next January, I think, or February, around that time we start shooting. And I think it’s going to be a hell of a ride. When you bring in Iron Man and Captain America and whoever else they wrangle from the Marvel universe, it’s going to be a hell of a film.”

After news surfaced that Joss Whedon would be helming The Avengers, it was reported as unconfirmed but this is just more evidence to the contrary.

It sounds like principal photography on Kenneth Branagh’s Thor is near done and we’re set for the big trailer reveal at International Comic-Con. It also appears that they’re already running with The Avengers with a start date at the beginning of 2011, as we’ve also heard from Samuel L. Jackson previously.

I don’t need to say it again, but I will anyway; Thor is my most anticipated Marvel character movie and has been for years. All signs point to this being something very special and we’ll let you know if it delivers live from Comic-Con this July.

Follow me on Twitter @rob_keyes.

Iron Man 2 is currently in theaters everywhere, Thor opens May 5, 2011, The First Avenger: Captain America hits July 22, 2011 and The Avengers is scheduled to debut May 4, 2012.

Josh Brolin Praises Men in Black 3 Script

May 13th, 2010 by lawwebbhh651109j87hN5gxp2l | Comments Off | Filed in Movie

On the same day that Columbia Pictures officially confirmed Men in Black 3 would be released in the summer of 2012, actor Josh Brolin, who has long been attached to the project, spoke with MTV Splash Page about his impressions of an early script for the film.

Brolin, who is rumored to play a young version of Tommy Lee Jones’ character, Agent K, explains how he wasn’t sure about the script at first, but as he learned more about the plot, he thought it was “really good.”

“It looks really, really good. I can’t tell you the story, obviously, but they pitched me the general story, and I was like, ‘Eh, I don’t know if that’s really my thing, man.’ … But then they got more specific with the story, and I go, ‘Yes, that’s f—ing great!’ This is a character where I feel like I can do some actual acting work within this franchise that everybody knows.”

Brolin went on to clarify, however, that the version of the script he read was “something early, early, early” and that “it’s very different than what is being written right now.” Brolin also neglected to confirm whether he is officially on board for the movie.

Men in Black is one of my “Sneaky Favorites” (copyright on that term pending). I say “sneaky” because I always forget how much I love it until I catch it one night on TV. Men in Black 2, on the other hand, was all sizzle and no steak. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones were still a good pair, but the sequel wasn’t nearly as smart as its predecessor and it focused too much on big effects and action set pieces.

Considering the general rule of diminishing returns when it comes to movie sequels, you might expect that I’d be disinterested in Men in Black 3, but that’s actually not the case. Given the fact that Etan Cohen is writing the script and Josh Brolin, who is one of my “sneaky favorite” actors, has some good things to say about the initial plot, I’m actually pseudo-excited about this film.

What do you think? Is there potential for Men in Black 3 to be good, or will it be bogged down among other big-budget action moves in the summer of 2012?

Pixar’s ‘Newt’ Canceled?

May 12th, 2010 by lawwebbhh651109j87hN5gxp2l | Comments Off | Filed in Movie

Pixar Newt canceled?

You may not be as familiar with a planned Pixar project called Newt (or “newt” as it appear in the logo above) as much as the upcoming Monster’s Inc. 2 and Brave (previously entitled The Bear and the Bow). We haven’t covered Newt here at Screen Rant but we thought you’d want to be in the loop about the film’s status.

According to The Pixar Blog, Pixar’s Newt has been canceled. There’s not much to go on and there’s not been an official announcement made by the studio confirming this news.

What we do have is a quick note from Walt Disney Company archivist Dave Smith. Mike over at The Pixar Blog e-mailed Smith (slyly from his personal e-mail not the website’s :P ) to ask why Newt had been removed from encyclopedia Disney A to Z. He received an unsigned one-line reply – “The film has been cancelled.”

To bring you up-to-date on Newt’s status, here’s a quick rundown (special thanks to The Pixar Blog):

The film was first announced in 2008 at the Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios 2008 Animation Presentation in New York. At that time, the film was scheduled for a prime summer 2011 release and the team was already in place, including director Gary Rydstrom (writer, director and sound designer on the Pixar short film Lifted), and producer by Richard Hollander (who produced the short film Presto).

Over time various different items were released for Newt, including leaked concept art (see below) and a detailed report on the story over at Ain’t It Cool News.

Pixar Newt leaked image

Early leaked concept art for Pixar’s Newt

However, there’s been rumblings for months now that all is not well with Newt. At first the film had a summer 2011 release date, but then Pixar announced Cars 2 for that release period (it was originally to be released in summer 2012), presumably delaying Newt till the following year. There was also a comment online from animation industry insider Floyd Norman saying that “Newt is dead.”

Then Pixar announced another sequel to one of its many hits, Monsters Inc. 2, due to hit theaters in November 2011, with Brave being pushed to 2012. I seriously doubt that Pixar would release two of its movies around the same time, and the fact that there was no new date announced for Newt just pointed to more trouble.

And now we have this news that apparently Newt has been shelved by the studio. I can’t say I was looking forward to it more than Monsters Inc. 2, or particularly Toy Story 3, but a new film from Pixar is always a good thing and it’s certainly unfortunate that the film appears to have been canceled.

Again, treat this as a RUMOR until we get some sort of confirmation from Pixar itself, but for the sake of discussion, lets just assume that Newt is off the slate (at least for now). What are your thoughts on this news? Are you sad that Newt is no more?

Captain America in 3D?

May 11th, 2010 by lawwebbhh651109j87hN5gxp2l | Comments Off | Filed in Movie

The First Avenger: Captain America in 3D

3D annoys me. It was partially cool for some movies for a little while as the occasional treat. But now it’s all over the place and for the wrong reasons. The majority of “3D” movies coming out aren’t there to deliver some special experience, it’s to unfairly charge extra on an already over-priced ticket. That’s it.

The problem really hits home with the advent of post-conversion 3D, where a film not shot or meant to be in 3D gets a fake 3D tacked on. We saw this with the underwhelming Clash of the Titans and believe it or not, it almost happened with Iron Man 2.

While Marvel Studios didn’t have the time to make it happen with the Iron Man sequel, there are two candidates for 3D coming out next summer in Thor and The First Avenger: Captain America.

In the case of Iron Man 2, Jon Favreau made it clear that he won’t convert Iron Man 2 in 3D, that it would need to be filmed that way for it to work. Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige spoke on the matter of how they were investigating the possibility of converting Iron Man 2 after seeing the (financial) success of Avatar and Alice in Wonderland.

“We couldn’t have turned over a version of the movie 10 or 20 weeks earlier for 3-D conversion without undermining the quality… We used all the time we had for mixing and editing and discovering the right tone.”

From this we can expect them to be looking at the same options for Marvel Studios’ upcoming tentpole films next summer. Since Thor is deep into production and wasn’t shot in 3D, it would need the crappy post conversion (hopefully that doesn’t happen). Captain America on the other hand, begins shooting next month so they could shoot it in 3D from the get-go.

“The team has been doing a lot of research into 3-D processes, and we’re looking at it on future films when we have the time… We will be doing it at some point.”

Don’t be surprised to hear that The First Avenger: Captain America, The Avengers or Iron Man 3 will be coming in 3D. There’s money to be made.

I’m only interested if it’s shot in 3D. If not, I won’t watch it that way.

What do you think about seeing some of Marvel’s upcoming feature films in 3D?

If you’re interested, join our discussion on what we can expect from Iron Man 3.

Thor opens May 5, 2011, The First Avenger: Captain America hits July 22, 2011 and The Avengers is scheduled to debut May 4, 2012.

3D ‘Men In Black 3′ Set For Summer 2012

May 8th, 2010 by lawwebbhh651109j87hN5gxp2l | Comments Off | Filed in Movie

Men in Black 3 3D release date

Columbia Pictures has officially added another tentpole feature film – the 3D sequel Men in Black 3 – to the already jam-packed Summer 2012 release schedule.

The studio’s press release confirmed that both Men In Black 1 & 2 director Barry Sonnenfeld and star Will Smith (Agent Jay in the M.I.B. universe) had signed on to return to the hit franchise.  They also reported being “in advanced negotiations” with Tommy Lee Jones to have him return in Men In Black 3 as Agent Kay, with Josh Brolin (No Country For Old Men) in talks to play the younger version of Agent Kay as well.

Brolin’s involvement with Men In Black 3 has been rumored for a long time now but this is the first bit of news concerning just what his role might be.  The press release did not however, clarify if Brolin would be playing a younger version of Jones’ character OR a new recruit-in-training to take Agent Kay’s place.

I only mention this as it would seem odd to me to have an actor of Brolin’s stature appear only briefly via flashback sequences in the film, since I assume Men In Black 3 will take place primarily (or entirely) in the present.  You can expect this matter to be easily settled once the official plot synopsis for the third M.I.B. flick is released.

Josh Brolin as young Agent Kay in Men in Black 3

Josh Brolin = young Tommy Lee Jones?

The chairman of Sony Pictures Worldwide Marketing and Distribution had this to offer as well:

“Sony’s summer of 2012 will get off to a red hot start with an incredible 3D adventure for the Men in Black.  We couldn’t be more excited that the original filmmaking team responsible for the first two worldwide hits is reuniting for this third installment.  We love where the story is taking Agents Jay and Kay and know this new chapter will deliver a fresh fun twist for fans of the franchise while also introducing the Men in Black to a whole new generation of moviegoers.”

Presumably, he’s referring to the generation of moviegoers that were not yet alive in 2002 to see Men In Black 2 when it arrived in theaters. After all, the franchise only began back in 1997 which is really not that long ago – relatively speaking. ;)

Men in Black 3 movie

“Hey, old guys! Do those still work?”

Readers might recall my previous article concerning the potential for Men In Black 3 to be a return to form for the blockbuster sci-fi series following what I considered a sub-par sequel in Men In Black 2.  My thoughts – both for and against – remain the same, though I admit that having Brolin on-board sounds like a definite good thing.

But what do you think?  Does Men In Black 3 sound like a good idea to you?

Men In Black 3 will hit regular and 3D North American theaters on May 25, 2012.

The 12 Best Movie Sequels Ever Made

Best Movie Sequels

Before I begin with this list of our favorite movie sequels, I want to stress this is strictly opinion and not fact. I hope the following will incite discussion and debate, but let it be known that no list is definitive. Having said that, let’s get it on!

In honor of Iron Man 2 releasing this weekend, it seemed right to come up with a list of cinema’s top sequels. Not to mention, there are endless movie sequels in the mix for the upcoming years.

While the top three picks on our list seemed obvious, setting even them in order was a tough task. More difficult was rounding out a top ten. So, instead of just going with the standard ten, we’ve extended our list to 12. Included are four costumed heroes, a couple evil empires and some computer-generated classics.

There is a little bit of a difference between a sequel that tops its predecessor in terms of quality, and one that is a self-contained stroke of genius. These twelve films on our list fit both qualifications. While we’d love to explore what made every fun sequel a hit — like Wayne’s World 2 and its Jurassic Park spoof — it seemed more efficient to stick to the sequels that may have come second in order, but are first in our hearts.

Honorable Mentions:

Honorable Mention Best Movie Sequels

A dilemma cropped up in creating this list. Silence of the Lambs is a cherished masterpiece of cinema, yet many don’t realize the story is technically a sequel. Michael Mann’s underrated film Manhunter, starring Brian Cox as the infamous Hannibal Lecter, tells the tale you may recall from Brett Ratner’s Red Dragon. Silence of the Lambs explores the events that follow Manhunter, but it is generally considered the original of its own trilogy. So does it belong on this list? Instead of letting that debate take over, it takes an honorable mention spot.

Also on the honorable mention list is Desperado, the quasi-sequel to El Mariachi. Both films, created by Robert Rodriguez, follow the same character (El Mariachi), but also overlap in story. With only $6,000, Rodriguez made the legendary El Mariachi and eventually acquired a budget to shoot his concept with Antonio Banderas as the lead in a wide-release film. So, Desperado both is and isn’t a sequel. For that we’ll keep it off the main list, but it has earned the right to be mentioned.

Ironically, all but the top two picks on our list are still running franchises or properties in the midst of a reboot. That just goes to show you the creativity and lasting effect the following narratives have had, and the captivating stories they tell.

#12) Mad Max 2, a.k.a. The Road Warrior

Mad Max 2

“My life fades. The vision dims. All that remains are memories. I remember a time of chaos. Ruined dreams. This wasted land. But most of all, I remember The Road Warrior. The man we called “Max”. To understand who he was, you have to go back to another time…”

The first lines of Mad Max 2 give me chills every time. The first Mad Max was enjoyable enough, but it seemed to leave a young Mel Gibson in over his head. Only two years later, the Australian star showed up brilliantly in the sequel. The film felt more like the apocalyptic madness the first one missed at times. Don’t get me wrong, the first film has some great moments and feels like a revenge flick more than a Western, neither of which it claimed to be directly.

Maybe the first suffered from a limited release, while the second got wider exposure. Yet, when you watch the movies back-to-back there is a sensation that the first one can only prepare you for the sequel. The entire Mad Max franchise is a bit too B-movie to find its way higher on the list, but the second film deserves recognition as a vast improvement over the first.

#11) Toy Story 2

Toy Story 2

It is extremely difficult to convince yourself the second Toy Story is better than the original, but sometimes you just need to bite the bullet. Alone, the first is one of the best animated films ever, and was pivotal in ushering in the era of CGI animated features. Toy Story 2 improves upon the first in a number of ways, most impressively the animation. In only four years, from 1995 to 1999, the abilities of the Pixar artists to create their unique look while maintaining a level of total realism improved vastly.

More importantly, the story of the sequel deepens our relationship with the oddly relatable toys. The first shows how great life as a toy can be in a world where humans have a blind love of their toys, despite destructive lunatics like Sid. But in Toy Story 2, we get a sense of the uncontrollable lives of toys, which are so dependent upon people. What happens when maturing interests leave our toys helpless? It is more a second chapter than an extension of the first, which makes it a brilliant film in its own right.

With the quickly approaching Toy Story 3, the second film may not even end up being the best. But Toy Story 2 was evidence of an animation studio hitting its stride as one of the most formidable and dominating in its field. Thanks to the glory of the Toy Story franchise, Pixar has become as legendary as any studio in Hollywood.
